is harvested from the resin of the trunk of the Commiphora myrrha tree by piercing and cutting the trunks to allow the resin/juice to seep out of the trunk. The resin is then subjected to steam distillation. The end product is a yellow-orange, smoky-sweet and bitter flavour. This is where the name of the oil comes from, as the Arabic translation for bitter is murr.

The oil is not only used for its fragrance, but also for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
