The rosemary plant is a herb and its origin is, as mentioned below, the Mediterranean region and is very often used as a spice but also as a cosmetic additive or in skin care products. The plant gets its name from the Latin words "Ros" (dew) and "Marinus" (sea), which means "dew of the sea". It also grows in England, Mexico, the USA and North Africa.

Rosemary originally comes from the Mediterranean region, where it was initially used only as a medicinal plant. Later it found its way into Mediterranean cuisine as an aromatic spice and became one of the standard spices. Today it can be found in trade worldwide. Rosemary is an evergreen semi-shrub that grows up to two meters high and ages several years. It initially grows upright, sometimes with several shoots that can branch out. Over time, the herbaceous shoots lignify from the base upwards, which is why the plant is seen both as a perennial and a shrub. With older shoots the bark becomes cracked and flakes off. The narrow, firm leaves of rosemary are reminiscent of spruce needles. They are dark green on the upper side, light underneath and slightly felt-hairy. The sought-after odorants and flavors are mainly found on the leaves and stems. The blossom usually appears in spring, sometimes already in late winter, and can appear again and again throughout the year. The lavender-blue or whitish lip blossoms grow like grapes in clusters from the leaf axils. They have a double-lipped calyx of petals. The stamens protrude far. The ripening fruits are brown and decompose at the end into partial fruits with one seed each.

Thus rosemary naturally contains several antioxidant lines like: Carnosic acid, ursolic acid, carnosol, rosemary acid and caffeic acid. In addition, rosemary is said to have a slightly microbicidal effect, which is not proven.
